In early June, 1980, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region VIII was requested by the National Park Service (NPS) to assist in conducting sound level measurements in Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah. The NPS request came in response to the proposed development of the Alton Coal Field directly south of Bryce Canyon National Park. The sound level measurements were requested as part of the overall environmental assessment on the effects of surface coal mining on unique and significant public lands: Bryce Canyon National Park.
