Reports Haleakala silversword population assessments taken at Ka Moa o Pele cinder cone and Kalahaku Overlook in August, 1979. The total number of plants counted within the cinder cone was 3,737; however, plant regeneration was less than in previous study years. It is hypothesized that germination and seedling survival depend on several factors: 1) a temperature not exceeding 300 C; and 2) "relatively high moisture content of a stable sandy sub-stratum completely covered by cinder fragments no thicker than about 5 cm." Appendix A includes the complete Hypothesis on Germination and Seedling Survival. Appendix B details Substrate characteristics under Ka-Moa-o-Pele's silversword populations.
