Assimilation efficiencies of Plethodon cinereus and P. shenandoah were measured at 10-20 C using C14 labelled Drosophila melanogaster. Assimilation efficiency was inversely related to ambient temperature for both species, but there were no significant differences between the assimilation efficiencies of the two species at two temperatures. Since the metabolic rate of P. cinereus is directly related to temperature, these salamanders may have difficulty maintaining a positive energy budget during warm periods in forest habitats.
