Daytime surveys of Samoan and Tongan fruit bats were conducted to examine temporal patterns of fruit bat detections on Tutuila Island, American Samoa. The greatest numbers were observed in the early morning and late afternoon. However, variation was often extreme; and the mean number of bats observed during peak periods stabilized by the tenth randomly selected period. The authors suggest that surveys to estimate bat abundance should use a repeated design to reduce sample bias.
