The author states that the cove hardwood forests of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park probably represent the greatest aggregation of tertiary species now in the eastern United States. These he divides into two association aggregates, naming them Aesculion and Tsugion, and divides these categories still further. Tables of cove hardwoods of Tertiary derivation, shrubs and vines, pteridophytes, and the herbaceous stratum are used as illustrations. A list of Asian-American disjuncts concludes the manuscript.
