The National Park Service requested information on characteristics of unconsolidated highland deposits in the northwestern part of Joshua Tree National Monument. Tests by the United States Geological Survey suggest four general areas worth further exploration for shallow groundwater supplies. The purpose was to obtain information on the location, thickness, extent, and water-baring characteristics of the unconsolidated deposits in the highland areas near Pinto Wye, Stirrup Tank, Queen Valley, Pleasant Valley, Pinyon Well, Walls Street Mill, and Cow Camp.
