Thermal Environment of a Death Valley Pupfish

As earlier experiments with the endemic pupfish of Cottonball Marsh (Cyprinodon milleri) did not indicate exceptional tolerance for heat, the authors examined water temperatures in the small areas of water found in the marsh. A table shows the water temperatures recorded at various points, and a graph indicates the relationship between air and water temperatures. The study finds that the pupfish have access to relatively cool water, even during the summer, and are not subjected to severe heat stress. Study results indicate that these fish need a tolerance of wide temperature fluctuations more than heat tolerance.
