This memo reports the results of a visit by the author to Morristown National Historic Park on June 26, 1992 to consult with staff on ticks and Lyme disease and to take tick surveillance samples in the Wick Garden and environs. Nymphal deer ticks were collected by the author and Dr. Lance Risley. Six were found to be positive for the Lyme disease spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi, thus confirming the results of a 1990 study that noted that Northern deer ticks infected with Lyme disease spirochetes are present in Morristown National Historic Park in certain areas. Guidlines are given for managing ticks in Wick Garden. It is also suggested that appropriate precautions be taken to minimize exposure to Lyme disease among the staff and visitors to the park.
