This paper presents the history of National Park Service involvement with timber harvest plans for the Redwood Creek basin. It explains the threats to park resources from excessive erosion associated with timbering on adjacent lands, and initial agreements for park review of certain timber harvest plans. When park staff had access to areas proposed for logging, specific mitigation measures could be suggested; in recent years, restriction of access has reduced effectiveness of park input. Several park studies are mentioned which show ways to prevent avoidable sedimentation of Redwood Creek, and which have affected road construction practices and rules. Future work includes fostering cooperation with private timberland owners, encouraging long-term maintenance of logging roads, and completing a road status inventory within the park's Geographical Information System.
