A tree ring calendar for dating volcanic events at Cinder Cone, Lassen Volcanic National Park, California

Finch RH. 1937. A tree ring calendar for dating volcanic events at Cinder Cone, Lassen Volcanic National Park, California. American Journal of Science. 33:140-146

Using tree rings from pine trees located around Cinder Cone, the dates of recent explosions can be determined. Several trees which had roots in the soil underneath the ash and trees which rooted in the ash show that the first explosion probably occurred after 1485 and before 1680. The ring patterns seen in older trees show more specific dates of 1567 and 1666. The evidence given by snags of trees killed by hot lava flow support flows from 1720 and 1785.
