The Anthropology Department of the University of New Mexico, in 1936, decided to excavate Chaco Mound 50. The rate of deposition of the Chaco Canyon Valley floor was one of the questions to be looked in to. Findings show that there was a period of extreme erosion before, or early in the 10th century, and that sometime in the 11th century deposition stopped. Potsherds were dated for determining these periods. Erosion-deposition data gatered in this study coincide with weather fluctuations known for prehistoric Chaco.
