Available data do not support contentions that willows on the northern range have declined because of climatic change, fire suppression, reduced chemical defenses or other natural factors. Evidence points to overgrazing by unnaturally large populations of elk as the cause, bringing Yellowstone's "natural regulation" paradigm into question.
