In 1984 and 1985, water samples were collected at 18 different sites on ISRO to determine the levels of several indicator species of bacteria. The waters sampled were in or adjacent to campgrounds where visitors draw water for drinking and bathing purposes. Benson Creek samples exhibited high levels of bacteria routinely throughout the season; Chickenbone West, Benson Creek, Moskey Basin, and McCargoe Cove all showed high FC:FS at some time during the season, clear indications of human fecal contamination. Lake Superior control samples exhibited very low levels of bacteria, as should be expected. However, Rock Harbor sample sites had relatively high levels of bacteria in comparison.
