Two crustal models were designed to determine the nature of the upper crust in the volcanic region.. One was formulated using the refraction profile across Lassen Peak, between the Klamath Mountains and the Sierra Nevada foothills, and used standard refraction interpretation using ray-plotting. Another was designed from seismicity data of Lassen Peak and used linear inversion of the earthquake travel times. Both models had very similar results of depth and velocity. When compared to the overall Lassen geothermal system and surrounding areas, it was found that the data presented by the models correlated well with the distribution for seismicity and the velocity structure. Both models also indicated that Sierran basement continues under the Cascade volcanoes toward Klamath at least as far as Lassen Peak.
