Highway underpasses, constructed primarily to reduce collision deaths of endangered Florida panthers, are fairly successful, according to observations reported here. Monitoring shows use by a variety of wildlife of the 24 underpasses installed for the section of I-75 crossing Big Cypress National Preserve. The underpasses are not all used equally. The paper discusses design of the underpasses and associated fencing, monitoring methods (and vandalism of equipment), and planning implications for design and maintenance.
