Distribution and abundance of elk (Cervus elaphus) and mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) were studied from 1976 to 1981 in the Los Alamos area of New Mexico. Use of pellet plots, pellet-group data, and the associated statistics are evaluated and critiqued. The population fluctuations resulting from the La Mesa Fire of 1977 are discussed.
