This study examines the juvenile chinook salmon and steelhead trout using the Redwood Creek estuary in 1980. A considerable decline in salmonid numbers caused concern; one factor contributing to the decline may be modification of the estuary area by construction of a levee and by sediment accumulation resulting from upstream timbering. The young fish entered the estuary in early summer (peaking in late May and early June), and spent some time in the estuary. Breaching of the sand berm in early July may have flushed some of the juveniles into the ocean at too early an age, reducing survival. The thesis also reports population sizes; food habits; size, age, and time of year of estuary use; and compares growth of juvenile salmonids in the creek and in the estuary. Includes an original black-and-white print showing the pre-levee estuary. Two tables (mark and recapture data), 12 figures (length and catch statistics, major food items), and 15 appendices (food items, length frequency and capture data).
