One aspect of concern for the very limited number of remaining Florida panthers is health problems. This paper discusses panthers using Big Cypress National Preserve and Everglades National Park, noting gains and losses of individuals. Necropsies performed to determine causes of death have provided information on both natural hazards and such human-related problems as high mercury levels. In addition, physical abnormalities common in the group may hinder reproduction. The paper notes other medical aspects, such as vaccinations against common feline diseases, and assisting with injuries and with drugs for safe captures.
