The role of subduction component was studied in the petrogenesis of arc magmas in the Lassen volcanic region. Slab-derived fluids and not differentiation processes were found to contribute to the mantle wedge and the geochemical signatures observed in primitive lavas erupted from small centers across the southern Cascade arc. It was also found that slab-derived fluids have a profound influence on major element, trace element, and isotopic systematics of arc magmas. These fluids also strongly affect the modal mineralogy of the source peridotites in the in the mantle wedge as well as the melting processes in the mantle wedge.
