This report is on the affect of forest litter buildup and fire on nitrogen cycles in ponderosa pine forests at Bandelier National Monument, NM. Soil and litter samples were collected to determine the stage of nitrogen mineralization following a fire occurrence. Inhibition of nitrifying bacteria by monoterpene accumulation in the litter is the main focus of this report. There is also a discussion of monoterpenes and nitrication within the mixed conifer habitat of the Jemez Mountains salamander (Plethodon neomexicanus). Includes a detailed explanation of nitrogen cycling and ammonium dynamics.
