Fishtail Mesa is an 'island' plateau within Grand Canyon covering 1430 acres and similar in elevation, geology and vegetation to the main Kaibab Plateau. Because of its remoteness, it has never been grazed by domestic livestock and offers comparison with similar areas which have. Herbaceous species which are common in grazed areas were generally lacking, and most of the cover was of woody species despite appreciable winter deer use.
