Report summarizes a three year study of the flora and fauna of El Malpais National Monument, New Mexico (ELMA). Documentation of species, habitats, and communities that are rare or distinctive to ELMA. The lava fields and lava tube ice caves offer unusual environments for plant and animal habitats. Some isolated populations of species are suspected for being remnants of the Pleistocene. The geology of the area must be understood in order to study of its plant and animal populations. Soils, climate, species lists, cave biology, and threatened and endangered species are discussed.
