This study deals with the vegetation of the islands of Eastern Samoa (American Samoa). It seeks to present a system for identifying the plant communities by characteristic species composition, to document the communities by tabular statistics, mathematical methods, and vegetation mapping, and to determine the major environmental variables underlying any of the emerging patterns. The study distinguishes different types of vegetation based on floristic, structural, and habitat characters. Each community is described in terms of structure and floristic composition of the forest trees, ground cover, epiphytes, and lianas. Appendices include a checklist of vegetation of Eastern Samoa, relative dominance figures from 37 forest plots, tree data from 37 forest plots, dendrogram analysis of the fusion of 37 forest plots, X and Y coordinates for ordination graph, and a summary of Is values of 37 forest plots.
