Vegetation of Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument

This is the narrative summary of a study of the vegetation of Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument (517 square miles), and it includes a literature review and vegetation association descriptions. The project as a whole also includes mapping, a flora of the vascular plants, an annotated bibliography, and management recommendations. Location, physiography and geology, soils, climate, historical setting, and natural vegetation are summarized. Vegetation ecology and the ecology and pathology of columnar cacti are identified as research topics of special interest. The vegetation was mapped using aerial photographs taken in September, 1977, and data was also collected on the ground. A total of 29 vegetation associations were identified and described. All but 6 of them are desert scrub types, the remaining 6 being temperate scrubland and marsh land. Descriptions of each association, including distribution, floristics and physiognomy, are included. This comprehensive botanical survey provides a background to which faunal studies may be related. Extensive bibliography, 2 figures, 3 tables, 2 appendices (plant species list, chronological history)
