Major J and Dale B. 1985. Vegetation on Dall sheep range in the mountains of the western Noatak Valley. Natural Resources Survey and Inventory Report. 85/03. National Park Service, Alaska Region. Anchorage, AK
During July and August 1984, University of California, Davis, researchers studied vegetation on the Dall sheep range in the western portion of Noatak National Preserve. Vegetation was studied at four sites (Maiyumerak Mountains, Poktovik Mountains, Kilyaktalik Peaks, upper Kelly River) in the Baird and DeLong mountains. The vegetation is exhaustively characterized, both qualitatively and quantitatively. All vascular plants were recorded to species, and total vascular plant cover and cover of lichens, moss, rocks, and soil were also recorded. The Domin scale for cover was used and biomass calulations were made. Sheep fecal pellets were analyzed to determine food habits by species. The most consistently grazed plant is willow followed by cladonia lichens.
