The article reports on an investigation of the ecology of five pannes in the West Beach area of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. In addition, the paper addresses the distribution of pannes in North America and similar systems on a global basis. At the National Lakeshore, the relationships between plant species composition and dispersion, water chemistry and water depth/depth to water table were studied in five calcareous intradunal ponds (pannes).
