This is both an assessment of human impacts and a 'present-conditions' baseline study of Elk, Ossagon, and Lincoln prairies in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park (within Redwood National Park). The main focus is on the vegetation, including effects from modification of natural drainage patterns. The study forms the basis for long-term monitoring, and for management activities (such as a prescribed burn documented in this report) to help restore more-natural conditions. In addition to the history of Elk Prairie, the report describes methods for collecting data using line-point transects and methods for statistical analyses. Includes many full-page black-and-white photographs of Elk Prairie (early views rephotographed in 1986), tables summarizing burn and transect results, a large folded topographic map of Elk Prairie, and 7 appendices (lists of vascular plants found at Elk, Ossagon, and Lincoln prairies, notes on phenology of indicator plants, and others).
