This paper was written by Catholic University researchers with support from the Arctic Institute of North America and the Office of Naval Research. Classification and characterization of vegetation types are based on field work during the summers of 1949-1951 in northwestern Alaska from the Noatak and Kobuk rivers to the region southeast of Norton Sound. As a result of the study, a preliminary classification of the vegetation is presented that contains six major physiognomic classes and 22 types. The physiognomic classes include forest (three types), shrub (five types), dwarf shrub (five types), dwarf shrub-marsh (three types), and herb (six types). A characterization is given of each type including species composition, some environmental conditions, and aerial recognition characteristics.
