This document discusses the vegetation and Quarternary environment of the Kobuk River valley. It is divided into two sections, one covering the forest-tundra ecotone of the Kobuk River valley and the other the climatic and vegetational history of the Beringian region. In the first section, the nature and distribution of the forest-tundra ecotone is characterized and the relevance of these features to climatic and other changes in the present and recent past are discussed. In the second section, the extinct arctic-steppe biome is considered in detail.
