Prior to the study, made in 1963, it was known that three grassy balds (Andrews, Gregory, and Spence Field) were being invaded by woody plants. The author studied and mapped the species responsible and areas affected. Compared to earlier surveys in 1954 and 1958, 17 more taxa were present in 1963.
