This report on the status of birch trees at Walker Lake as regards past and future firewood harvest complements a study completed in 1986 (see Van Alstine et al, 1986). A field survey of trees on the lake shoreline was conducted by experienced foresters between 30 July and 2 August 1987. At the current harvesting level, there is no danger of major alterations of any forest ecosystem along the lakeshore. The authors visited the log harvesting permittee, Mr. Bud Helmericks, and the report includes observations from their conversations. Management recommendations are also presented. In addition, the report contains a paper prepared by Van Alstine on the effects of harvesting on the vegetative reproduction of paper birch.
