This extensive report describes the geologic setting, physiography, climate, vegetation, streamflow, water quality, aquatic organisms, and other characteristics of the Redwood Creek basin, the lower part of which is in Redwood National Park. Upstream logging and other activities have significant effects on park resources, but as details needed for management decisions were lacking, the United States Geological Survey initiated a three-year study. This report is concerned mostly with Redwood Creek hydrology and sediment loads, and effects of changes related to timbering activity. Increases in sediment carried by Redwood Creek are related to complicated patterns of erosion and deposition downstream, and influence extends well beyond immediate areas of logging or other disturbance. Among the 56 figures and 17 tables are stereograms showing channel and hillslope conditions in various reaches, historical records of major floods and annual rainfall, benthic invertebrate and suspended sediment data, and a folded location map (detailed).
