An observation of white tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) foraging on dead alewives (Pomolobus pseudoharengus) on beaches on North Manitou Island, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Michigan. The number of visits, the length of visits, and the number of alewives consumed were recorded for a total of 15.6 hours from May 28 to June 12, 1982. The nutritional value of alewives is compared to natural deer food.
