A Winter Food Cache of Microtus pennsylvanicus

Underground plant parts of Potentilla canadensis, Viola papilionacea, Convolvulus sepium and Ranunculus bulbosa were found in a winter food cache of Microtus pennsylvanicus in western Maryland. Potentilla canadensis, the dominant species in the old field, was the dominant species in the cache. It also had the highest caloric value. Although plentiful in the old field, rhizomes of Fragaria virginiana were not used as a food item.
