A reconnaissance winter survey for moose and caribou was flown 27-30 November 1977 in portions of Lake Clark National Park. The Mulchatna drainage, Chilikadrotna drainage, and mountain and shoreline region immediately north of Lake Clark were surveyed to gain information on moose densities, general distribution, and population composition. Researchers saw a total of 223 moose, consisting of 95 bulls, 30 calves, and 108 cows. Caribou were observed throughout the Mulchatna and Chilikadrotna drainages. A recommendation was made to conduct moose surveys during February when snow conditions are more ideal.
