Winter moose census, Lake Clark National Preserve - February, 1984
Twitchell AH. 1984. Winter moose census, Lake Clark National Preserve - February, 1984. Natural Resources Survey and Inventory Report. AR 84/04. National Park Service, Alaska Region. Anchorage, AK
During late February and early March 1984, an aerial winter survey for moose was conducted in Lake Clark National Park. The objectives of the survey were to determine areas of winter concentrations, identify areas for future trend monitoring, and compare data with a similar survey done in 1983. Results of this 1984 survey are depicted on maps and data forms. Moose productivity was high; of the 863 moose seen during this survey, 15% were calves and with but two exceptions (the Merrill River unit and the Keyes Point-Six-Mile Lake unit) calves averaged from 13% to 19% of all observations. Based on the surveys, three areas were identified as areas for composition trend monitoring : Telaquana Lake/Two Lakes area, Chilikadrotna/Snipe Lake/Bear Creek area, and south Koksetna Hills/Kijik/Miller Creek area.
