Wolf survey, Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve - 1986
Adams LG and Stephenson RO. 1986. Wolf survey, Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve - 1986. Natural Resources Survey and Inventory Report. AR-86/04. Alaska Region. Anchorage, AK
This report covers the first year of a study initiated in 1986 to determine the demography and distribution of wolves in and adjacent to Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve. An aerial survey covering 8900 mi2 was conducted 10-12 April 1986, and 68 wolf observations were recorded. Information on wolf distribution and harvest was also gathered from Nunamiut residents of Anaktuvuk Pass who provided an additional 33 observations. The combined observations yield an estimate of 38 wolf packs and three lone individuals in and adjacent to the Park and Preserve. A conservative density estimate for the entire Park and Preserve of 1 wolf/52 mi indicates that wolves are moderately abundant. The report includes necropsy data from 16 wolves harvested during 1985-86.
