Yampa Canyon and the surrounding area discussed in this report occupy nearly half of Dinosaur National Monument. In describing the geology of the area, the author offers hypotheses regarding the origin of the river system and patterns, and explaining several unusual geomorphic features. The canyon is divided naturally into three sections, with significant differences among them in topography, fall of the river, geology, and other characteristics. The discussion of canyon origin and development includes the suggestion that the present site of the Yampa Canyon was at one time buried under the Browns Park formation.
