Cooperative agreement CA8018-2-0001 Describes efforts to eradicate the yellowjacket (Vespula pensylvanica) from Haleakala and Hawaii Volcanoes National Parks. Toxic baiting trials using Knoxout 2FM in heptyl butyrare-enhanced chicken bait proved effective in reducing populations. Found that toxic baiting was most effective in high-elevation shrubland and least effective in forests. Presents guidelines for resource managers dealing with yellowjacket threats to visitors and native ecosystems. Numerous tables illustrate characteristics of nest sites, yellowjacket activity, food preferences, elevation effects, and abatement trials.
