Discussion of A species fate, by the numbers by C C Mann and M L Plummer, April 2, 1999. A letter comments on Charles C. Mann and Mark L. Plummer's discussion of the recent population viability workshop in San Diego, which appeared in the April 2 issue. Although the writer commends the article as a generally good synopsis of the meeting, he disagrees that the Yellowstone grizzly bear population is increasing annually by 5 percent. Most of the apparent rise has taken place since the fires of 1988 burned a significant portion of the ecosystem, so that bears may simply be more visible or may be in new territory.
