The introduction of lake trout into Yellowstone Lake, apparently in the late 1980s , represents a threat to the cutthroat trout population by competing for the cutthroats' resources and eating them. Yellowstone officials may use gill nets to entrap female lake trout or deploy extra nets at their spawning grounds during spawning season. Scientists have predicted that the introduced trout could decimate the cutthroat population within 20 years, reducing their numbers by 90 percent, which would have dire effects on grizzlies and piscivorous birds.
