This book chapter reviews the Pleistocene history and zoogeography of North American freshwater fishes. Areas covered are the Bering Strait and Bering Land Bridge; Gulf of Alaska drainages; and the Mackenzie River exchanges with Beringia, the Mississippi Basin, and the Pacific Slope. Fish of the study area have three principal origins: 1) the unglaciated refugium of the Yukon River and adjacent portions of the Bering Sea and Siberia; 2) the regions south of glaciation and west of the Continental Divide; and 3) the Mississippi River Basin south of glaciation. The faunal composition of modern drainage basins seems to have been determined by access routes from these areas. Detailed information on the distribution of freshwater fish in the individual regions is presented. The distribution is consistant with the geologic evidence that exchange between Beringia and other continental refugia in Eurasia or North America was often restricted, while exchange within the region was often possible.
