Elk (Cervus canadensis) management in Yellowstone National Park was reviewed by examining the literature, discussions with biologists, and on-site visits. We concluded that present vegetative conditions on zootic climax sites are natural, that elk populations can be maintained at relatively stable equilibrium densities by natural regulating mechanisms on the northern Yellowstone Park range, and that current management practices based on these concepts should continue. Numerous scientific and educational values should result from such management if research is adequately funded to monitor the results of these practices.
