The two-volume Preservation Maintenance Plan for Weir Farm National Historic Site was developed to guide park managers in the maintenance of the cultural landscape and the perpetuation of the historic character. The plan is based on the research and documentation of the landscape at Weir Farm National Historic Site, presented in the Cultural Landscape Report, Volumes 1 and 2. The Preservation Maintenance Plan, initially organized into two three-ring binders, focuses on maintenance activities on priorities outlined by park staff and treatment priorities in the CLR. The Feature Inventory and Information Manual volume is a site specific reference manual that includes information for every time of tree, shrub, perennial, and invasive plant found at Weir Farm, including a description of the the historic appearance of intent, preservation objectives and work procedures, and descriptive characteristics. The Operations Manual and Maintenance Records volume documents the existing conditions in 1998, required maintenance work, and maintenance calendars to facilitate planning and carrying out cyclic maintenance tasks. The Plan divides the property into three zones for the purpose of inventorying and collecting data on specific landscape features. It uses a numbering system for individual trees and shrubs to indicate the location, whether it is a tree or shrub, and a particular inventory number. A plant list cross-references these numbers to the plant identification numbers from the CLR. The Plan also includes calendars to facilitate work planning. The Weir Farm National Historic Site is located in Ridgefield and Wilton, Connecticut. Acquired by the National Park Service (NPS) in 1990, it is the only national park dedicated to the stewardship of a property associated with an American painter. As the home and workplace of the eminent American impressionist painter J. Alden Weir, the landscape of Weir Farm has been captured in many of his paintings and sketches and is therefore of national historic importance.
