Beach Mouse Research Program - Gulf Islands National Seashore Beach Renourishment Project
Holler NR and Moyers JE. 1991. Beach Mouse Research Program - Gulf Islands National Seashore Beach Renourishment Project. Beach Mouse Research Program 1991 Annual Report
This study was initiated to provide base data on Perdido Key beach mouse (Peromyscus polionotus trissyllepsis) populations on Gulf Island National Seashore during and after a major beach renourishment program. In addition, the project was to provide data on potential food resources and food habits of the beach mouse in order to formulate resource management recommendations for the maintenance and protection of the beach mouse populations. 512 trapping stations were established along one continuous transect, beginning at the eastern end of the dune system and extending west for 7 km. Vegetation data were obtained from 1 m2 plots located 1 m away from each of 50 selected trapping stations. All plants within each selected plot were identified and analyzed for seed productivity. Results are reported in narrative format supported by graphs and tables.
