The National Park Service conducted an aerial moose survey during November 5-13, 1997, in Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve. The purpose of the survey was to estimate the moose population size and sex/age composition for the Yukon River corridor between Eagle and Circle, Alaska. A total of 384 moose were observed during the study. Of these: 197 were cows, 136 bulls, and 51 calves. Composition of the observed bulls was 15 yearling bulls, 63 medium bulls, and 58 large bulls. The overall density of .27 mosse/mi2 is among the lowest reported in interior Alaska. The sex and age composition of the YUCH moose population appears consistent with that of a stable population.There is some indication that the bull:cow ratio in YUCH has decreased during the last 10 years.
