The point of bear management at Redwood National Park and the included state parks is to maintain bear populations in their natural state while avoiding bear/human conflicts. Providing bear-proof containers, monitoring bear observations, and educating staff and visitors about bears are among the methods used. Although much of the plan is similar to plans in use at other national parks, Redwood National Park does not have the option of relocating problem bears, because suitable sites are not available. The document provides details of program elements, along with a list of 7 research topics on which more information is needed. The appendices contain sample notices to be posted at picnic tables and other areas, bear immobilization guidelines, several sample reporting forms, and more.
