This plan provides operational guidelines for the management of interactions between bears and people. The policy of bear management in Katmai is to retain the natural population dynamics of bears, allow their natural patterns of feeding and habitat use to continue unimpeded, preclude learned orientation of bears to people, and minimize bear/human confrontations. Monitoring and research programs are discussed and are designed to limit bear-human confrontations. Procedures for controlling human food and garbage are described, methods for educating visitors are presented, and means of avoiding surprise encounters with bears are outlined.
