From the Objectives: "The objectives of this study include the following: A. Characterize current relative abundances and use patterns on the mainstream of the Elwha for five river dependent bird species, Harlequin Duck (Histrionicus histrionicus), American Dipper (Cinclus mexicanus), Spotted Sandpiper (Actitis macularia), Common Merganser (Mergus merganser), and Belted Kingfisher (Ceryle alcyon). B. Compare current relative abundances of river-dependent birds on the Elwha with similar rivers in Olympic National Park, providing a context for detecting changes over time. C. Develop and clearly describe survey procedures that can be used to monitor potential impacts of dam removal." Study conducted within Olympic National Park, WA.
