Risk analysis of the aquatic resources in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore: An ecologically based inventory and estimation of the effects of land use practices

Six lakes and 5 streams in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, MI were anlayzed for impacts from human activities. In the lakes (Beaver, Chapel, Legion, Grand Sable, Miners, and Section 36), Secchi disk depth, temperature and dissolved oxygen profiles, pH, alkalinity, total phosphorus, and Kjeldahl nitrogen were sampled. In the streams (Mosquito River, Miners River, Hurricane River, Seven Mile Creek, and Sullivan Creek), substrate size, large woody debris, benthic macroinvertebrates, and fish were analyzed. Universal Soil Loss Equation was used to calculate estimates of sedimentation. Results indicate that lakes and streams within the park are currently in good health. Aquatic macroinvertebrate taxa are listed and the orders of the insects statistically correlated to substate and habitat type. Baseline data for future monitoring are presented. Risk analysis provides detailed maps of areas where road building and timber cutting would create the most disturbance and provide management a tool to make future plans. Color maps illustrate substrate and habitat types at the permanent plots along the Hurricane, Mosquito, and Miners Rivers.
